Graham Cook
Graham Cook is a predominately artist working across multiple disciplines, from design, portraiture, painting and photography. A graduate from the Maidstone College of Art led to a highly successful career as an award-winning designer/creative director, ultimately as co-owner of his own Corporate Communications business.
In the last 10 years Graham re-focused, finding a photographic voice that was equal to his other creative pursuits. In 2019 he held a highly regarded solo exhibition at the Joe Cornish Gallery in North Yorkshire, was the featured photographer in On Landscape and published a sell-out hard-back resumé of his work. He regularly exhibits and his work is held by collectors not only in the UK but also Europe, Australia, the Far East, and the USA. It can also be found in corporate environments in London, Poland and Hong Kong.
Graham’s photography explores the intersection between perception, emotion and visual form. He’s known for transforming everyday scenes into evocative, often ambiguous compositions, approaching photography less as documentation more as interpretation. Using the camera as a tool to translate internal states into external imagery he challenges the conventional clarity associated with photography. The result is a body of work that leans toward painterly abstraction, where colour, texture and rhythm take precedence over literal representation.
His images invite open-ended interpretation rather than guiding the viewer toward a fixed meaning. This encourages a personal, subjective response reflecting a belief that his work can function as a dialogue between artist and audience. With an emotional ability to connect with time and space he maintains a tactile sensitivity in his work.
By reimagining a visible world laced with ambiguity, he finds simplicity in ordinary things, giving another life to the hidden, discarded and ignored. It’s ‘the capacity to see beyond the visible’ to see an object ‘not for what they are but what else they can be’. Graham continues to push the boundaries of photographic abstraction, redefining what photography can be in a contemporary art context.
