Hand painted (digitally) Photograph 51cm X 76cm
Alice Gur-Arie
Alice is an award nominated artist/writer whose multidisciplinary practice features hand painted (digitally) photographs from around the world.
She started in advertising as a copywriter and graphic designer, moving client-side to position global brands, manage their multi market communications, and direct complex consulting contracts. Some years ago she returned to her creative roots.
Untrained, Alice invites a viewer to replace the window through which they see the world, with a lens that transforms visual experience into something that is at once familiar and foreign. Inspired by the natural world, landscapes, seascapes, nature, and wildlife dominate her portfolio, ranging in style from bold saturated abstracts to soft, textured tones.
The process begins by uploading a photograph into the computer and enlarging it. The image is then “painted” using a “brush” and/or “washes”. For detail, the photograph is painted pixel by pixel. Alice says, “My art is not about digital manipulation or software, but about transforming the canvas into a re-imagined world.”
Alice's first solo exhibition was at the Embassy of Iceland in London. 2 works auctioned at Christie’s followed. Her images appear on book covers, and are held in private collections in the UK, Canada, the US, Germany, Switzerland and Israel.
Short listed for the GeminiArt Prize, long listed for the Aesthetica Art Prize and The Secret Art Prize, and with 2 nominations for the Terry O'Neill Tag Photography Award, Alice exhibits permanently at The Greenwich Gallery in London, and is represented internationally by Bridgeman Images.
She has published two companion books: Twelve: Shengxiao Zodiac Creatures in Art and Words, and Five: Wuxing Elements in Art and Words.
Alice holds degrees in English literature, Education, and Business from York University in Toronto.
